Printed Photo Books: How You Can Reach Out About the Environment

Increasingly, concerns for the environment are spreading; for those photographers who want to be able to contribute to the cause, printed photo books are a popular way of demonstrating their vision of the world, why the environment is important, and what needs to be done to preserve the area for years to come.

(source)The Sierra Club pioneered this approach, publishing gorgeous photo books to convince people to protect places such as the Grand Canyon and the North Cascades.

Turns out, you don’t have to be Ansel Adams to help WTA spread the message that trails and wilderness need adequate funds to protect them. Your photos can help elected officials understand the importance of trails to their constituents. A letter and a picture of you and your friends hiking at Big Four Ice Caves, or backpacking West Cady Ridge can help make the point that damaged forest roads and trails desperately need funds.

While as a photographer you may not have the same resources as organizations like The Sierra Club, you’re likely to find that you can create your own printed photo books at a relatively low cost. Similarly, you can partner with environmental protection organizations in your community. When you do, you’ll be able to do more than just publish your photos.

You’ll find that others may want to contribute essays, poems or other writings about why conservation is important - works that you can include along with your photos in the printed book. You’ll find that you can offer a list of resources so that others can become more involved.

More importantly, you can use the photo books that you create to do more than just raise awareness of how you feel: you can sell the books and donate to proceeds to an organization of your choice; you can donate the books to fundraising events for environmental organizations.
