Printed Photo Books: Celebrating Your Best Work

It used to be that photography fell into one of three categories. Either photos were taken to document a place or an event, or photos were taken as a professional endeavor or photography was art for art’s sake. Thanks to printed photo books, many photographers are finding them in a position in which they can celebrate their best work, regardless of why the shots were taken:

(source)And, the best thing yet—while it was thus far considered a promotional event (read charity) to show photographs in a gallery, today it makes as much business sense as artistic to woo the new age artist—the hitherto unsung photographer!

The writing on the wall is clear—photography, as an art form has come of age, no longer content to just be a tool of documentation, no matter how valued.

The above excerpt was discussing photography in India and the ways in which it has changed (and continues to change); while it may not - at least initially - seem applicable to your own situation, there are likely to be some parallels.

Of those parallels, one of the most notable is that, with printed photo books, you’re no longer in a position where your work has to simply document an event. With printed photo books, you’re no longer forced to market your documentary work to publishing houses; self-publishing is a simple process. And, perhaps most importantly, the art of your photography is something that does not need to be limited in any way.
